If you didn’t know that Golf GPS is a thing, well, now you do. Golfers use GPS to track the range of their shots from the initial hit to its stopping point. These devices help the golfer determine what type of club he/she should use and how much power to put into each swing (depending on the course). Golf requires a sense of patience and finesse that most people mistake as boring and time-consuming.
The reason why you see so many pro golfers able to land their balls near the hole or in an ideal location is they’ve understood the distance between them and their target. Some of the following golf GPS have metrics and apps designed to help the golfer’s form and technique specifically. Garmin has an absolutely ridiculous number of fitness trackers and golf-orientated instruments, but we decided to check out some of the competition as well.
Here are our picks for the best Golf GPS’ of 2018:
Garmin Approach S20
The Garmin Approach S20 is a dedicated golf GPS that’s highly sought after. It’s one of the cheaper ones on our list. It’s a stylish watch that doesn’t look all too different from most sport watches of today. Aside from golf metrics, it also acts as a premier fitness tracker counting calories burned, distance traveled, and even hours slept.
- Having a Garmin Connect account is recommended with this watch because it will record swing metrics and shot distances for you. It will then upload them to your account.
TomTom Golfer 2
The Golfer 2 is another dedicated golf GPS with many of the same shot analyzing metrics as the Approach S20. It’s a little slimmer than the S20 with some different apps installed. What’s unique about the golfer 2 is that comes pre-loaded with data of nearly 40,000 international golf courses. While that’s definitely not every golf course in the world, it’s pretty close. If you’re looking to up your game, try playing on one of the courses the Golfer 2 is familiar with.
- If you are playing on one of the preloaded courses, the Golfer 2 will automatically provide you with hazard updates about the course and distances between areas. How’s that for science fiction?
Bushnell Neo Ion
While Bushnell is popular for their optics, few people are aware of their own version of a Golf GPS. It too comes preloaded with data on over 35,000 courses in 30 different countries. Similiar to the Golfer 2, it will provide you with information on those courses as you move through them. If you’re thinking about going competitive, it is also approved for tournament play.
The one major difference with the Neo Ion is that it is not a touchscreen. Some golfers enjoy the user-friendly touchscreen, but at the same time the Neo Ion provides many of the same metrics as the Golfer 2 or the S20.
Izzo Swami 5000
The Swami 5000 is not a watch or wearable device. This might throw some customers off immediately, but it does it job as good as any other Golf GPS. It comes loaded with 30,000 pre-loaded courses. It is also the cheaper golf devices on our list.
While it may not be connected to any online service, it still has the ability to save data and scores to its onboard database.
