CES 2018: Casio’s Rugged Outdoor Watches and Cameras

By Tomas Leave a Comment

At CES 2018, Casio showcased a lot of tough products. Tough is kind of an understatement considering how bulky some of these products are-from smartwatches to outdoor and action cameras, Casio seems to be putting the emphasis on surviving the elements. Image result for casio logo

Casio is a renowned watchmaker, but the G-Shock and Pro-Trek Smartwatches are definitely out of the ordinary. The FR100 and GzEye cameras are also built like tanks, so they can be trusted in conditions that a normal action camera might be vulnerable in.

G-Shock Rangeman GPS Smartwatch

The Rangeman smartwatch is an expansion of Casio’s Master of G line of smartwatches, which are also built pretty tough. It features triple sensors (altimeter/barometer, compass and thermometer) and is rated against the toughest of elements including low temperature and mud.

This is one of Casio’s first smartwatches to feature GPS technology, which you can pair with the G-Shock app via Bluetooth. From there, you can track your movements and even plot courses to navigate so you can study your adventures before and after you embark on them.

Perhaps the most notable feature of this smartwatch is a built-in solar panel to power the GPS. Keep in mind, this does not power the entire watch, just the GPS, and other digital functions. A single charge should get you between 31-33 hours of life.

The Rangeman won’t be available until April of 2018, but judging by the size of the crowds at CES, it’s sure to be a popular seller.

Pro-Trek WSD-F20WE Smartwatch

G-Shock Pro Trek GPS Smart Watch

Casio announced a limited edition colored version (WE) of its WSD-F20 smartwatches. It may not seem like much, but the WSD-F20 is already an impressive smartwatch, and pretty big when fitted on the wrist. Its large interface is touchscreen, and you can switch around the interface to one of your liking.

In a similar manner to the Rangeman, you can plot points along your a set journey because this watch is also equipped with GPS.

Among the WSD-F20’s features is its ability to pair with the EX-FR100 and GzEye cameras. You might be wondering why you would need such an ability the large interface on the WSD-F20 actually doubles as a video screen, so you can see what the EX-FR100 or GzEye are seeing. This way, you can position the cameras in a way that gets you the best quality footage.

Once the watch and camera are paired, you can shoot images or start recording videos with the buttons on the side of the watch.

EX-FR100 Outdoor Camera

The EX-FR100 camera, and its sister version, the FR200, is an interesting outdoor device. It’s actually composed of two parts. The first is the camera itself, which detaches from the controller and can be mounted pretty much anywhere. The best spot would be on the back or top of a backpack while you’re on the trail.

The controller is what you’ll carry and allows you to take images at will. You can also go completely hands-free and allow the camera’s sensors to take pictures at intervals. Bascially, it will detect when the light and color are the best and take those stills so you don’t have to worry about fiddling with the controller

  • This is a useful feature for when you need two hands focused on a bike or watercraft.

GzEye Action Camera Related image

Of all the action cameras seen at CES 2018, the Casio GzEye takes the cake for being the tankiest of all action cameras. You probably wouldn’t need it for normal activities, which is why its specifically designed for extreme sports in the snow, mud, and water. Its bulky body also makes it shock resistant.

This camera’s mount makes it ideal for the edges of snow or surfboards. You have the option of purchasing it with a remote control that wraps around your wrist or a handheld device with an LCD screen.

Best Water Hydration Packs of 2019

By Tomas Leave a Comment

Hydration packs are also called water bags, CamelBaks, and water bladders. All of these names revolve around the general idea of a water backpack with a tube connecting your mouth to the pack. These packs are much more accessible than water bottles when you’re spending a large amount of time outdoors.

Having the biggest pack that holds the most amount of water isn’t exactly the best decision. Water weighs more than you think. A lightweight pack filled with water is going to be more lenient on your body than a bigger one or multiple ones.

Here are our recommendations for the best hydration packs of 2018.

Unigear Tactical Hydration PackUnigear Tactical Hydration Pack

If you’re looking to get that cool military look while hiking, the Unigear hydration pack will give you style in the outdoors. The pack has pockets on the outside that allow you to place your valuables in. It’s not ideal for hikes or outdoor activities lasting longer than a day due to its size.

The valve at the end of the hose is bite-activated, meaning you don’t have to open the hose with your fingers in order to get a flow of water. On a smaller note, one of the buckles actually functions as a whistle in case of an emergency.

This backpack comes with a free 2.5L bladder.

Mubasel Gear Hydration BackpackMubasel Gear Hydration Backpack

This backpack is a pretty simple do-it-all. It may look small on the outside by Mubasel Gear designed this backpack to hold clothes and valuables if you take out the bladder. You can even use it as a pillow while you sleep and can withstand up to 132lbs of weight.

Best GPS Radios of 2019

By Tomas Leave a Comment

GPS equipped radios are hard to come by. The norm is to buy GPS and two-way radios separate from one another. However, there are a couple of manufacturers that have made the process simple for buyers. While there’s not too many of them, these GPS radios are the face of the GPS/radio hybrid technology. This innovation is still quite new, that’s why there’s so few of them.

Having one device that does two jobs might be more or less expensive depending on the manufacturer. However, what it will do is save you the hassle of trying to use two different devices at once for two different purposes.

Here are the best GPS Radios of 2018:

ICOM Marine

The ICOM Marine is a highly sophisticated hybrid radio. The GPS will plot your location, bearing, and speed but what’s really awesome about this radio its variety of functions. From distress calls to weather updates, the Marine is more of multi-tool than a hybrid radio.

A couple of its functions allow the user to know when it’s been dipped in water. Water is also repelled away from the receiver grill by a function called Aqua Quake. Not only is it a multi-tool, but it’s pretty durable when put up against the elements.

Standard Horizon HX870

The HX780 is also a pretty durable radio and has the ability to float in water (just to give you an idea of how waterproof it is). Aside from GPS, one of its notable aspects is that its display screen is very user-friendly. Some radios have problems with their channels and acronyms being difficult to understand (especially if one is new to radios and GPS’). When synced up with other HX870 or Standard Horizon devices, it will display a mini-map of the locations of your party.

When synced up with other HX870 or Standard Horizon devices, it will also display a mini-map of the locations of your party.

Garmin Rino 750

Garmin is widely known for its user-friendly and intuitive designs with fitness trackers. The Rino 750 is no exception as the newest member of the GPS/radio hybrid family. It is entirely touch sensitive on its main screen for most of its primary features. There are a couple of push buttons on the side for additional features.

As one of the fanciest and easiest to use GPS radios, it is also one of the most expensive. Garmin as a company is well versed in the tracking technology industry, so it would make sense for the Rino 750 have the latest and greatest in metric software.
