10 Essential Crossbow Safety Tips for Hunters

Using a crossbow provides many benefits. From gaining physical activity, to gaining self-confidence, to learning a new skill, there are many benefit to being able to use a crosbow. An important part of learning how to use any weapon is making sure that you do so safely. Follow a few simple steps, and you will make sure that you and those around you stay safe when you are using a hunting crossbow.

1. Protect Yourself

There are a few different ways that you can protect yourself while using a crossbow. The first major saftey measure that you can take is to protect your eyes by wearing saftey glasses. Also, you can ensure your saftey by wearing proper clothing while using your crossbow. You should have on close-toed shoes and should have a minimal amount of exposed skin. The best way to guarantee that you have little to no exposed skin is by wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts.

2. Never Carry A Loaded Crossbow

Carrying a loaded crossbow could lead to accidentally shooting yourself or someone else.

3. Only Point Your Crossbow At Your Intended Target

Refer to safety tip #2. Don’t risk accidentally harming yourself or anyone else. When you are practicing, only point your crossbow at your intended target. If you are not going to shoot toward your intended target, remove your bow.

4. Protect Your Fingers

Using a crossbow can be a dangerous sport for certain appendages, such as your fingers. Protect your fingers while out shooting. Don’t allow your fingers inside the bowstring’s release path if your bow is cocked or loaded. Do not put your finger on the trigger until you are certain that you are ready to shoot.

5. Keep A Clear Path

Make sure that your eye is always on your target and that you can always clearly shoot before setting up to fire your crossbow. Make sure there are no obstacles in the way of your path and make sure there is nothing touching your crossbow when shooting.

6. Properly Store Your Crossbow

When not in use, your crossbow should always be safely stored away in your quiver. It is important that your crossbow not be easily accessible to anyone who doesn’t know how to operate it, because improper use can lead to many dangerous situations.

7. Understand How To Use Your Crossbow

One of the most important parts of using a weapon is that you know the proper way to use it. When you first buy your crossbow, it is important thay you read through your owner manual. Different types of crossbows will have specific ways of use that can only be taught by reading your manual.

8. Never Dry Fire

Your crossbow is extremely heavy and extremely powerful. Firing your crossbow when it has no bow in it is called dry firing. Draw firing can seriously damage your crossbow and could even cause it to injure you.

9. Be Careful When You Uncock

Never use a cocking device to uncock your crossbow. That could be extremely dangerous. The best way to uncock your device to ensure your safety is by firing your arrow into the ground or an intended target.

10. Correctly Load Your Crossbow

When you are cocking your crossbow, make sure you hold the string at equal distances on both sides. Not only will this ensure proper accuracy when you fire, but it will also ensure your safety.
